New set of Kitchen Knives.

Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year. As I mentioned on the last post, I am going to speak about the selection of a new set of kitchen knives.

Hi everyone.

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

As I mentioned in the last post, I am going to speak about the selection of a new set of kitchen knives.

I’ve had this question asked by my own adult children as they move out into their own homes.  This what I’ve told them.

Now I don’t stock knives at this point, So I have nothing to sell in this blog.

The selection of a set of knives is very personable and differs from one person to another. It has nothing to do with cost  or quality. You can have the very best quality that money can buy and you will never use it if doesn’t feel right.

If you and your partner share the cooking duties you need to go shopping together. That is a must. What you like may not feel right for your partner and vice versa. It will come down to a compromise. You need to spend the time going to different shops looking at different Brands.  The both of you need to pick them up and hold them, to feel the balance, the weight and how the grip/ handle feels in the hand.

Don’t forget different people like different style of knives as they cook. Me, I love a cleaver. My wife likes a universal knife. Most knife brands come with a number of different styles in their range so you can choose the type of knife you buy in your set.

As a starter set I would recommend a

5″ paring knife

7″ utility knife

Large broad blade knife

Carving knife

I also recommend checking with the store, as some sets come with a carving fork, kitchen scissors and a steel.

If you get a knife block or a wall magnet to go with it, all the better. You don’t want to spend good money on an investment for the kitchen and just have them bounce around in a draw.

As I said in the last blog, a good set on knives should last a lifetime.

I’ve found a good mid range set of knives are better than some of the very high end blades. Go with what feels right, not what the store salesperson is trying to tell you.

Happy Hunting.
